Job Description


Department Summary:

The Finance Department at Tangerine is primarily responsible for the capture and reporting of financial information for internal and external audiences in accordance with applicable standards. In addition, the Finance Department performs other important functions.  The Treasury Administration function administers securitization transactions and ensures transaction details are accurately captured in our administrative systems so that they can be properly valued, accurately accounted for and appropriately cash settled.  The Accounts Payable team ensures that all outstanding obligations are discharged on a timely basis. The Management Accounting Team provides reporting and analysis to support senior management decision making and prepares forecasts each month as to the Bank's expected earnings. Furthermore, the Management Accounting Team works with the Strategy department and the business to prepare the annual Plan.

The Finance Department continually assesses risks and controls and takes action to ensure there is an effective system of internal control over financial reporting and other Finance functions. Finance also supports the business to ensure the successful implementation of corporate initiatives.    


Role Purpose:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the General Accounting and Taxation areas of Tangerine Finance department by processing accounting entries and preparing supporting schedules and account variance analysis accurately and on a timely basis. This role is responsible for documenting, analyzing and improving processes and ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures are developed with references to applicable IFRS standards. The Senior Accountant of General Accounting and Taxation reports directly to the Manager of General Accounting.


Role Accountabilities:

  • Create accounting journal entries which comply with IFRS requirements for operating expense accruals, premises leases (IAS 17), employee benefits (IAS 19), share based payments (IFRS 2), foreign currency transactions (IAS 21), interest and effective yield methodology (IAS 18 & IAS 39), the mutual fund lines of business, government grants (IAS 20), consolidation (IAS 27) and taxes (IAS 12).
  • Keep up to date with the developments in Accounting Standards as provided by the Director, Accounting Policy and effectively implement applicable changes in the current accounting practices.
  • Prepare variance and other analysis and provide information to other areas of the Finance department and the Bank as required on a daily, monthly, quarterly or annual basis.
  • Participate in the implementation of financial control and accounting procedures and processes for new and existing products and services, responsible for complete end to end documentation as it affects general accounting and taxation areas.
  • Critically assess current journal entries, processes and procedures to ensure compliance with IFRS.
  • Assist in the tax function as required, including but not limited to income tax and GST/HST filings and schedules.
  • Support the Senior Manager, Manager and analysts in responding to queries from taxation authorities, external auditors, BNS and outsourced service providers independently and satisfactorily.
  • Document and maintain policies and procedures.
  • Identify and implement process improvements on a continuous basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Minimum 5 years of work related experience in a banking environment
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in accounting and finance
  • Solid background in business analysis or project management is an asset

Professional Certification

  • Professional financial accounting designation – CPA, CA, CGA, CMA, ACCA, etc. (Canadian or overseas)

Specialized Knowledge

  • Excellent understanding of IFRS especially standards related to lease accounting, revenue recognition, foreign currency transactions, employee benefits, share based payments, taxes and government grants

Technical Skills

  • Practical experience in consolidation
  • Familiar with bank products and related accounting – GICs, effective interest method, mutual funds
  • Familiar with SOX and the Canadian regulatory environment and their reporting requirements
  • Technically grounded in end-to-end accounting processes
  • Proficiency in computers, Excel and MS Office applications


  • Exceptional ability to build relationships and work cross-functionally to lead projects and achieve results
  • Advanced organizational skills to manage multiple initiatives, adapt to changing priorities and produce high-quality deliverables against pressured time commitments
  • Strong ability to “piece together the entire puzzle” by gathering information from various sources/departments/people/reports

Working Conditions:

The Senior Accountant of General Accounting and Taxation will be working in a traditional office environment and may be subject to special working conditions as needed by the business. Special working conditions may cover a range of circumstances from regular evening and weekend work, overtime, shift work, working outdoors and/or working with challenging clients.
